Interesting Comment From Leafs Coach Ron Wilson

Leafs head coach coach Ron Wilson spoke about Luke Schenn after last night's exhibition loss.

"I think if he was in just about any other city you wouldn't hesitate to keep him around. But it seems so many people would be trying to nitpick the kid from the outside, and that's something we need to isolate him from. If he is good enough to make our team in the top four he will be on our team. I don't think it's wise....you could see a kid start at six and keep on improving but, if he didn't and you know how the rules are after 9 or 10 games you can't send him down or back to junior let alone to the minors so your kinda stuck with him if he hit a plateau and stopped improving. And the thing that stinks is we only have ten days to decide."

I'm curious if Ron Wilson knows how to speak English? That comment made no sense to me at all...

I thought it was interesting because it makes sense to me. Let me explain.

Wilson believes the 'media' will be hard on Schenn if he stays with the team, because he will undoubtedly make some rookie mistakes. The Leafs organization doesn't want to put Luke in that situation where he potentially will be reading articles in the paper critizing him, or why the Leafs kept him around at such a young age. If Schenn is a top 4 defenseman on the Leafs once the exhibition schedule ends, he will stay. But Wilson points out that he may start the season as the Leafs 6th defenseman, and he may never improve beyond that in his rookie year. The Leafs only have 9 regular season games in which to decide on whether they will return Luke to Kelowna. That's why Wilson is saying it's going to be a tough decision.
