Picking 9th isn't bad by any means

  • The Rockets have the 9th overall pick in Thursday's WHL bantam draft. It marks the first time since 1998 that the Rockets pick in the 9th spot. In 1998, head scout Lorne Frey selected defenceman Richie Regehr.
  • The Rockets haven't picked this high in the draft since 2007, the year Arizona born Luke Moffatt was selected 2nd overall by the hockey club. In 2000, the Rockets picked goaltender Josh Lepp with the 4th pick overall.
  • Other picks in the top 10 for the Rockets were Kevin Reinholt 2002 (10th overall), Kiel McLeod in 1997 (8th overall), Jason Ryznar in 1999 (5th overall), Scott Hannan 1994 (8th overall), Kyle McLaren 1992 (5th overall) and Adam Smith 1991 (1st overall).
  • With the Rockets selecting 9th, I thought it would be interesting to see what type of player other teams have picked at that draft position. Let's exclude last years draft as that player picked 9th overall was unable to participate full time as an underage 15 year-old.

2008: Ryan Murray was selected 9th overall by Everett

2007: Christian Magnus was selected 9th overall by Swift Current

2006: Brayden Schenn was selected 9th overall by Brandon

2005: James Wright was selected 9th overall by Vancouver

2004: Joel Broda was selected 9th overall by Tri City

2003: Keegan Dansereau was selected 9th overall by Calgary

Picking 9th hopefully isnt as bad as picking in the top 5, then the boss chokes. Every year he needs a reminder of how he botched the Luke M pick.

was it a bad pick. i hear through the grapevine that old man moffat is a bit of a pain in the ass and a bullshit artist. i dont see a smart operation as kelowna making such a mistake. i think promises were made by daddy and then rescinded on.
