Things that make me go hmm...

  • Should we be surprised at Mitchell Callahan's solid start to the season? Not really. After 18 games last season 'Cally' had 16 points in his first 18 regular season games. Callahan had 7+9=16 before scoring just two goals in his next 18 games.
  • While Callahan should pick up the WHL Player of the Week award (he was just named officially this morning), goaltender Adam Brown could receive honorable mention. Brown was 4-0-0-0 last week with a save percentage of .919 and a goals against average of 2.50. Brown stopped 124 or 134 shots in those four victories.
  • If you are wondering who was the Rockets best performer in October, the honour goes to Shane McColgan. McColgan had 13 points in October, just one point better than line mate Mitchell Callahan. McColgan had 4+9=13 while Callahan had 5+7=12 during the month.
  • Chilliwack Bruins forward Brandon Manning has points in 13 of the 14 games he's played this season. The 20 year-old scored one of three goals against Adam Brown Saturday night. The Bruins got a 'beauty' when he returned as an overage.
  • Rockets defenceman Colton Jobke was injured in the second period of Saturday night's game after a big hit by Bruins forward Blair Wentworth. It was a clean, hard hit against the end boards. Jobke didn't return. It's unsure whether he will play Wednesday against Edmonton.
  • Tyler Matheson, who was the odd man out in the 20 year-old cut down, is now playing with the BCHL' Cowichan Valley Capitals. Matheson has 4 goals and 3 assists in thirteen games.
  • Is it just me or are WHL referee's staying away from calling checking from behind penalties? They are now either being called boarding or charging penalties.
  • What upset me on the weekend? The linesmen that were hesitant in jumping in to break up a fight involving Tyson Barrie. You have a skilled player like Barrie involved in a scrap and the linesmen are admiring the fists flying. Would you like popcorn with that front row seat? They had several chances to step in and break it up but let the two players flail away. Maybe I'm being oversensitive here, with the fear that Barrie could break a finger/knuckle or suffers a concussion. Should Barrie be fighting? The quick answer. No.
  • I am not budging on my prediction that the Chilliwack Bruins will finish first in the BC Division. Make no mistake, the team you saw Saturday night was no where near playing their 'A' game. The power play moved the puck around the perimeter, but had little in the way of secondary chances. Plus, Howse, Horak and Robin Soudek were abnormally quiet.
  • Say what you want about Bruins enforcer Curt Gogol, but you notice him on the ice don't you? He always shows up.
  • The Rockets are 11 for 20 on the power play in their last four games and have not allowed a power play goal (18 for 18) in their last four games.
  • Codey Ito is now playing with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Notre Dame Hounds. Ito, who was released by the Rockets' in October, has 4 goals and 4 assists in 11 games.
  • Here is a head scratcher. The Everett Silvertips played three games in three night's this weekend. No big deal right? It is when you start the weekend Friday in Chilliwack, bus down to Portland to face the Hawks Saturday and then go back up north to Vancouver to face the Giants Sunday in an early 6 pm start. Would it not have made more sense to start in Chilliwack, head to Vancouver and then to Portland? Brutal.
  • The poll question to the right should read, 'what is the main reason BEHIND the Rockets recent turnaround'? You get the idea. Thanks for your votes.
  • In case your are wondering, I am involved in Movember. I began the growing process with several others from our radio station to raise funds for Prostate Cancer. So if you see me around the arena with this odd looking thing under my nose and above my upper lip, you will get the idea.
